Vera Charlton didn’t set out to become a children’s book author. For most of her working life, she followed a very different path — practical, organized, and about as far from illustrated picture books as you can get. But creative impulses have a way of being patient.

It started with a small golden character with round glasses. Then came a fox with an enormous tail and absolutely no sense of caution. Before long, Vera had a world — and two characters who refused to stay quietly in her sketchbook.

The Bilo & Friends series was born from a simple conviction: toddlers don’t need words to understand a story. They read faces, gestures, color, and energy. A drooping shoulder says everything. A wide-open mouth says the rest. Vera designs every page with this in mind — no text, no narration, just pure visual storytelling crafted for the youngest eyes.

Vera lives in a small town somewhere in Europe — the kind of place where you still know your neighbors and the seasons still matter. She works from a studio that is organized in theory and chaotic in practice, surrounded by paper, pencils, and far too many reference sketches of a certain golden creature with a fondness for getting into trouble.

Bilo & Friends is her debut series. She is already working on the next adventure.
